Water System

The existing water system serves about 13,700 persons in Muhlenberg Township, 4,500 persons in Laureldale Borough, 1,500 persons in Temple Borough, and less than 100 persons in Alsace Township. The Muhlenberg Township Authority acquired the original system in 1940 and later purchased three adjoining water companies, the George J. Hassler and Mammoth Springs Water Companies and the Temple Borough System in 1994. Since the acquisition, the total number of customers has increased from 1,958 to 7,734. Included in this total are 6,971 domestic, 580 commercial, 42 industrial and 41 public metered customers. In addition, there are 98 fire protection customers.

The Authority's present sources of supply consist of twelve operating deep wells.

There are seven storage reservoirs in the system, with a total storage capacity of 4,850,000 gallons.

The existing water system includes approximately 93 miles of transmission and distribution mains varying in size from 24-inch to 2-inch and four booster stations. Average daily water use is approximately 4.2 million gallons while the peak daily water use is approximately 5.4 million gallons.
