Wastewater System

In 1961 a wastewater system was constructed to serve most of the Township residents, as well as commercial and industrial establishments. All of the densely populated areas of the Township are served by the existing wastewater system. Intercepting sewers, pumping station and force mains have sufficient capacity for areas presently serviced as well as areas to which sewers may be extended in the foreseeable future. The wastewater system is comprised of 96 miles of sewer main, six sewage pumping stations, one ejector station, force mains and wastewater metering facilities. These facilities currently serve 5,046 residential customers, 446 commercial customers, 31 industrial customers and 18 municipal customers.

Wastewater facilities were constructed in accordance with the permit issued by the Sanitary Water Board of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania on November 5, 1959. Under an agreement between the Muhlenberg Township Authority and the City of Reading, all Township wastewater is discharged to sewers of the City of Reading and treated in Reading's wastewater treatment plant.
